Read to Learn offers reading instruction to functionally illiterate and limited English-proficient adults. Trained volunteer tutors work one-to-one and in small groups with adult students to improve reading, writing, and basic skills. Professional site supervisors direct student assessment and evaluation as well as develop individualized lessons. Vocabulary development, word analysis, reading comprehension, and practical writing skills are incorporated into the lesson content.

Our Program
Read to Learn began in January 1985, funded by a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education. As of February 19, 2008, 8,629 unduplicated students have been tutored.
The major goal of Read to Learn is to improve the quality of life in the Northwest suburbs by raising the level of adult literacy.
Our adult literacy program is free and volunteer-based. As of February 19, 2008, 4,767 volunteer tutors have been trained.
Trained volunteer tutors work with native English-speaking functionally illiterate adults and limited English-proficient adults to read, write, and speak English.
Professionally trained site supervisors direct the assessment and evaluation of students, provide instructional materials, and supervise tutors.
Literacy classes meet in public libraries, school libraries, and churches throughout the Northwest suburbs.
Community-business-education partnerships with the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Schaumburg Township District Library, Township High School Districts 211 and 214 have led to additional grants from the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Office and the Illinois Community College Board as well as contributions from the private sector.
